After 20 years in the Navy, including one year as a photo-journalist combat correspondent in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam war, he earned a Masters Degree in English from San Diego State University. His wife of 51-1/2 years, Barbara, died in 2007. He currently lives in Henderson, Nevada, with his daughter, Debbi.
