What if the universe is not smooth all the way down?
At the end of the nineteenth century, physics seemed almost complete. Newton had explained motion. Maxwell had unified electricity, magnetism, and light. Thermodynamics had revealed the laws of heat and energy. To many scientists, nature looked like a grand machine whose remaining mysteries were only details.
