Max the City Dog tells his story in the first person. Max lives in Brooklyn and enjoys going on the subway to Coney Island Beach with his "people family". He explores the beach area taking in the local scenes and landmarks, basks in the sun, walks the boardwalk and races along the water's edge with his pal Joey. He has many friends at the beach including the local lifeguards who all know him. In the late afternoon on the shore, Max spots Joey in the ocean having trouble in the big waves.
