Metaphors We Live By: Book XIV
Culture, Belonging, & Identity

The fish does not know it is in water.
Culture is this.
It is not the environment you observe.
It is the medium through which you observe everything else.
The assumptions so fundamental they are not experienced as assumptions.
The way things are understood to work, before the question of whether they might work differently ever arises.

Metaphors We Live By: Culture, Belonging, & Identity is a collection of forty essays examining how culture forms the self before the self is old enough to evaluate it, what belonging costs and what it provides, and what happens to identity when the culture that shaped it no longer fits.

Inside, you will explore:
- Why the deepest cultural assumptions are not revised by information but by immersion
- How belonging has terms and conditions that are only fully revealed at the border
- What outsiders see about a culture that insiders cannot access from inside
- Why assimilation moves in one direction and what is left at the door
- How the group shapes the self before the self notices the shaping
- What leaving costs, even when leaving was the right decision

This is not an anthropology of culture.
This is not a guide to belonging.
It is a series of observations about the invisible formation. How culture enters before it can be evaluated, how belonging exacts its price, and what identity is made of when the water finally becomes visible.
For those formed by a culture they did not choose.
Or trying to understand what that formation produced.
