Missing Hurricanes (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781915606822)

In Missing Hurricanes, Nancy Anne Miller returns to Bermuda to explore the island as both homeland and inheritance: a place of dazzling beauty, bodily memory and unsettled history. These poems move through limestone houses, salt air, heat, reefs and hurricanes, registering the island's textures with an almost tactile intensity. Yet beneath the paradisal surface lies the long shadow of colonialism - its language, rituals, hierarchies and violence - and Miller's searching, often wry poems refuse to look away.

Time shifts across the collection, at once historical and political, yet slowed to the sensuous pace of a semitropical afternoon. Personal memory opens into questions of belonging, empire, race and displacement, while storms become emblems of fear, endurance and attachment. Drawing the natural and political weather of island life into the same charged atmosphere, Missing Hurricanes presents Bermuda in its extremities: intimate and estranged, cherished and blighted, beautiful and haunted.
