Michael Bearden was born seeing what others could only hear.
Growing up on Chicago's South Side with synesthesia--a rare neurological gift that painted every note in vivid color--Bearden experienced music as no one else could. Guided by the woman he lovingly called "Mom Number Two," the shy boy at the piano would grow into one of the most sought-after musical architects in the world. Over four decades, Bearden shaped the sound of icons: Michael Jackson. Whitney Houston. Madonna. Jennifer Lopez. Liza Minnelli. Lady Gaga. As pianist, composer, producer, and music director, he directed legends, and helped define the performances that defined eras. He has also performed on The Super Bowl, earned Emmy nominations, and directed the music for the Academy Awards. In rooms where history is being made, Bearden is the conductor--shaping sounds and keeping time. But his memoir is more than musical, it is also deeply personal and reflective. His story begins in the hallways of a Chicago grade school, where a young Bearden forged a close friendship with a girl named Michelle Robinson--long before the world knew her as Michelle Obama, First Lady of the United States. Decades later, he stood at the center of history once more, serving as music director for the presidential inauguration of Barack Hussein Obama. Few lives trace a circle quite so breathtaking. Told with candor, warmth, and the kind of insider detail only a trusted collaborator can offer, this memoir is a front-row seat to American cultural history--the backstage tensions, the creative breakthroughs, the private heartbreaks, and the relentless pursuit of perfection that life at the top demands. Bearden writes as someone who has experienced greatness, but more importantly, as someone who helped build it and stepped into his role in history to embody it--a true Modern Maestro. At its heart, this is a story about excellence: what it costs, what it requires, and what it means to deliver it when the whole world is watching. Featuring black-and-white photographs from Bearden's storied career, each captioned in his own words, Modern Maestro: Music, Mastery, and the Art of Leading Legends, is the portrait of a prodigy who saw sound in color and quietly shaped the soundtrack of a generation.Michael Bearden is one of the most respected and accomplished music directors in modern music history -- a true maestro whose versatile skills as an arranger, composer, conductor, and keyboardist have made him indispensable across genres, stages, and screens. Rising from the South Side of Chicago, he began playing piano as a child and built a career that spans over 500 artist collaborations, from Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Ray Charles, and Jennifer Lopez, to Lady Gaga -- for whom he has been Music Director since 2013. He also served as the final Music Director for Michael Jackson during the iconic This Is It tour and supervised the musical direction for the 97th Oscars (March 2025).
Bearden has been nominated three times by the Television Academy for Outstanding Music Direction, including for Lady Gaga's 2017 Super Bowl LI Halftime Show -- the most-watched Halftime Show in history -- and for One Last Time: An Evening With Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga. Beyond live performance, his credits span film, television specials, world tours, award shows, and philanthropic projects. Bearden has also founded TOMiC Recordings to support artistic freedom, scored documentaries and feature films, and continues to shape the sound and soul of popular music globally.
