Description
xThis essay offers an unprecedented technical and anthropological analysis of the construction of America's great infrastructures, leading the reader on a journey that begins with the engineering challenges of the railroads and great suspension bridges before culminating in the conquest of the Manhattan skyline. The volume decodes the evolution of steel structures, analyzing how early experiences in the railway sector forged the skills of the Mohawk-the legendary "Skywalkers" of Locals 40 and 361-positioning them as indispensable protagonists in the transition from the hot riveting of early bridges to the structural "tube-frame" revolution introduced for the Twin Towers. Through this perspective, the text explores the unbreakable bond between Indigenous artisanal mastery and the engineering innovations required to surpass the 400-meter threshold.
The work rigorously examines the transition from the rudimentary protocols of the Great Depression-marked by the ruthless doctrine of "Assumed Risk"-to modern prevention engineering and OSHA regulations. Each chapter transforms the chronicle of construction into a lesson on building sites where resilience and millimetric precision merge with the aptitude for working in the void. The reader will discover how the design of One World Trade Center, with its high-performance reinforced concrete armored core and state-of-the-art fall arrest systems, represents the pinnacle of a century of technological and regulatory evolution. This is an essential analysis for students of engineering and architecture, as well as for industry and occupational safety professionals, dedicated to those who wish to understand the technical soul of New York's giants and the evolution of the safety culture whose origins are today too often forgotten.
