The Translator: Professor Emeritus of French at Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Beck has published on a broad range of topics and French authors. In addition to numerous book reviews, pedagogical articles and studies of medieval works, he has published on Molière, Flaubert, Zola, and Jouvet. His concentration, however, has been on Michel de Montaigne and François Rabelais. This is his second translation of a very relevant French work of criticism of Montaigne. On three occasions, Dr. Beck has been invited to teach at the Université de Pau.
