Moral Tribes: Identity, Polarization, and Sacred Values in 21st Century Culture Wars

In an era of deepening divisions, Moral Tribes provides the psychological framework needed to understand why politics, identity, and culture feel increasingly like sacred, non-negotiable battles.

Drawing on Jonathan Haidt's Moral Foundations Theory, Social Identity Theory, and decades of research on affective polarization, this book reveals how ancient tribal psychology-kin selection, reciprocity, group loyalty, and sacred values-operates in today's digital, media-amplified environment. It explores liberal and conservative moral matrices, identity fusion, motivated reasoning, purity spirals, cancel culture, and the rise of totalizing identities that turn policy disagreements into existential conflicts.

Key Topics Include:

• The six moral foundations and why liberals and conservatives "talk past" each other
• The shift from ideological to affective polarization (data through 2026)
• Sacred values that resist compromise on both sides
• How media algorithms, elite overproduction, and institutions amplify division
• Real-world consequences: family rifts, mental health crises, democratic fragility, and stifled innovation
• Evidence-based pathways to moral pluralism: common humanity priming, moral humility training, viewpoint diversity, institutional reforms, and thoughtful use of emerging technologies

Written as a companion to the Tabula Rasa and The Political Mind series, this volume is accessible yet rigorously grounded in empirical research. It includes pedagogical features, case studies from campus conflicts, DEI debates, immigration, gender issues, and more, plus practical student action items for navigating culture wars with intellectual honesty.

Ideal for courses in psychology, political science, sociology, communication, and ethics, as well as for anyone seeking to move beyond tribal outrage toward greater understanding and constructive engagement.
