David Dorsen was Assistant Chief Counsel of the Senate Watergate Committee and an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York for five years, where the action takes place. He handled two of the most important libel cases in recent memory. He represented General William Westmoreland in his suit against Mike Wallace and CBS and he represented John and Maureen Dean against G. Gordon Liddy and others. He's written books on Justice Antonin Scalia and Judge Henry Friendly of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit: Henry Friendly, Greatest Judge of His Era (Harvard University Press 2012) and The Unexpected Scalia: A Conservative Justice's Liberal Opinions (Cambridge University Press 2017). He taught public policy at Duke University and Evidence at Georgetown Law Center and George Washington Law School. In his spare time, he was Wine and Food Editor of The Washingtonian Magazine for 20 years and was an active 25% partner in a horse-breeding and racing stable, Nonsequitur Stable, LLC . Currently, he is writing a play about the Watergate's Saturday Night Massacre, a book on a case he handled in private practice, and an opera based on Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls, for which he wrote the libretto. He graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School, where he served on the Harvard Law Review with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the late Justice Antonin Scalia.
