Mount Auburn: Its Scenes, Its Beauties, And Its Lessons (1860) is a book written by Wilson Flagg that provides a comprehensive and detailed account of the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The book is divided into several chapters, each of which explores different aspects of the cemetery, including its history, architecture, landscaping, and the various monuments and memorials that can be found there. The author begins by describing the natural beauty of Mount Auburn, which he argues is one of the most picturesque and serene places in the United States. He then goes on to explain the history of the cemetery, which was founded in 1831 as America's first rural cemetery. Flagg describes how the cemetery was designed to be a place of both beauty and contemplation, where people could come to reflect on the meaning of life and death.Throughout the book, Flagg provides detailed descriptions of the various monuments and memorials that can be found in Mount Auburn, including those dedicated to famous figures such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and Mary Baker Eddy. He also discusses the architecture and landscaping of the cemetery, highlighting its Gothic Revival style and the many beautiful trees and flowers that can be found there. In addition to its aesthetic beauty, Flagg argues that Mount Auburn also has important lessons to teach about life and death. He discusses the various religious and philosophical beliefs that have influenced the design and use of the cemetery, and argues that it serves as a powerful reminder of the transience of life and the importance of living a meaningful existence.Overall, Mount Auburn: Its Scenes, Its Beauties, And Its Lessons is a fascinating and informative book that provides a unique insight into one of America's most beautiful and historic cemeteries.
