Dr. McHugh was raised in the Central Valley of California; he received all his schooling there, and upon completion of his PhD in Chemistry at UC Berkeley, joined the General Electric Co. in upstate NY. He now resides in Florida. Genealogical research became a principal hobby, and in the pursuit of his mother's lineage, he discovered forty letters that his great-granduncle Ingalls wrote concerning his 1870 journey west. These letters became the "backbone" for the subject book.
