My Life on the Plains, Or, Personal Experiences with Indians is General George A. Custer's autobiography. Covering the years from the end of the Civil War to the Battle of the Washita in 1869, this first-hand view into warfare on the Great Plains shows much of General Custer's style which led him to destruction at the Battle of the Little Big Horn.
Originally published as a serial in the Galaxy magazine in the early 1870s, My Life on the Plains covers many exploits of the Seventh Cavalry's time on the frontier from 1867 to 1869. Four years after publication, Custer met his end in combat. The book also has asides on geography, wildlife, the structure of the United States government, the challenges of settling the frontier, and the often difficult or complex relationships between the Plains tribes and the settlers.
