Navigating the Next Generation: A Guide to Working with Millennials and Gen-Z (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9798994437537)

Your best people keep leaving. Do you know why?

For a lot of small business owners, hiring and retraining has become a never-ending loop. Every departure costs money, drains morale, and pulls attention away from the work that actually grows the company. Millennials are the group most often blamed. Gen Z is now walking in behind them with expectations of their own.

Dr. Tracey B Manuel spent years hearing this same frustration from fellow owners. He is a small business owner himself, and he decided to go find out what was really happening. He interviewed millennials who had quit jobs at small IT companies in Charleston, South Carolina, and asked them plainly what pushed them out the door. Their answers were more consistent, and more fixable, than most managers expect.

This book turns that research into practical guidance for managers, team leads, and business owners. It starts with why people leave and what the main motivation theories say about it. Then it gets specific about what younger workers told him they need to stay:

• Open, honest communication from the people who lead them
• Respect for their work, their time, and their credit
• Real chances to learn, grow, and be promoted fairly
• A workable balance between job and life
• A culture that matches what the job ad promised

You will also find a look at the four generations now sharing the workplace, tips for writing job ads that attract younger candidates, and a closer look at how Gen Z approaches work. Feedback, flexibility, training, and community involvement each get their own section, along with ideas you can put to use without a big budget.

Gen Z gets real attention here too. Many of them are highly capable with technology but have little work history, so they often need clearer expectations from day one. They also lean toward autonomy, flexibility, and work that means something. Knowing that before you interview them saves a lot of frustration on both sides.

Part of what makes the book useful is how honest the interviews are. People describe being passed over for a friend of the boss, working 14 to 16 hour days, or hearing "that's a problem everywhere" when they raised a concern. You may recognize your own workplace in a few of those stories. That is the point.

The tone is direct. The advice is grounded in what people actually said, not in stereotypes about who is lazy or entitled.

This book is for you if you:

• Manage or hire younger employees
• Own a small business and keep losing good staff
• Work in HR, recruiting, or leadership development
• Want to understand why the generations clash at work

Dr. Manuel holds a PhD in Organizational Leadership and Development and writes from both research and experience.
