EVERY GIFT WAS EVIDENCE.

At forty-six, Martha Pratt is finally starting over. Divorced, her children grown and gone, she lands the first real job of her life keeping the books at a Philadelphia shipyard and buys a small condo over the river that is hers and no one else's. Then Jack Dempsey notices her. He is generous, gentlemanly, wealthy in a way that never seems to cost him anything, and he makes her feel chosen for the first time in her life. A week in Italy. A weekend in the islands. A handbag worth more than she used to make in a month.

But Martha keeps the company's books, and the numbers have begun to tell a story she cannot unsee. Every gift Jack gives her matches an expense in the ledger, to the dollar, on the day. And she is not the only one counting. The FBI has been watching Jack for years, and now her name is in the file too.

She can balance any account but this one. Is the man who loves her a thief, or is she about to burn down the best thing she has ever had over a column she only thinks she can read?

Trust, she is about to learn, is the braver accounting.
