Networked Aerial Systems: Implementing 4G and 5G Connectivity for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798188494759)

Distance changes everything.

A drone may perform perfectly near the launch point, yet become difficult to supervise when terrain blocks the radio path, interference increases, or the aircraft moves outside the reach of a conventional control link. Once an operation depends on cellular communication, the challenge is no longer simply installing a modem and inserting a SIM card.

You must understand coverage, latency, handovers, packet loss, routing, security, redundancy, power use, and what the aircraft should do when communication becomes unreliable.

Networked Aerial Systems gives you a practical framework for adding cellular communication to unmanned aircraft without treating the connection as something that will always be available.

This guide explains how airborne equipment, mobile carriers, ground services, autopilots, operator applications, and remote infrastructure work together. You'll learn how to design the communication path as part of the complete aircraft rather than as an accessory added at the end.

Inside, you'll discover how to:

- Understand how cellular communication differs from traditional radio control
- Choose suitable modems, antennas, SIM options, routers, and onboard processors
- Estimate bandwidth requirements for commands, telemetry, payload information, and live media
- Measure delay, jitter, packet loss, and signal quality
- Position antennas while considering airframe materials and interference sources
- Manage tower handovers as the aircraft moves between coverage areas
- Route information securely between the aircraft and operator
- Use private tunnels, authentication, encryption, and access controls
- Reduce unnecessary traffic and prioritize essential messages
- Separate flight-critical functions from optional payload services
- Design redundant communication paths and automatic failover behaviour
- Prepare sensible responses to degraded or completely lost communication
- Record performance information for post-flight investigation
- Test coverage on the ground before committing equipment to the air
- Use simulation, bench checks, and staged flight trials to verify the complete setup
- Plan for carrier outages, congestion, roaming restrictions, and unexpected network changes

The explanations are practical and conversational. You won't simply be told that cellular technology provides greater range. You'll learn where it performs well, where it can fail, and how those limitations affect operational decisions.

The book also makes an important distinction: a communication link does not replace the flight controller's responsibility for keeping the aircraft stable. Essential actions such as position holding, returning, landing, or following a predefined contingency plan should not depend entirely on a distant server responding at the right moment.

You'll also explore why legal authorization, airspace requirements, operational risk, crew responsibilities, and emergency procedures must be considered alongside the technical design. A connection may make a distant mission technically possible, but responsible operation still requires planning, supervision, and clearly defined limits.

Whether you're developing inspection platforms, mapping aircraft, research vehicles, delivery prototypes, emergency-response tools, or experimental long-range projects, this book will help you create a more dependable communication architecture.

It is suitable for drone developers, robotics engineers, remote pilots, university students, researchers, integration teams, and organizations exploring cellular-supported flight operations.

Stop treating mobile communication as an unlimited replacement for conventional radio. Understand the complete path, prepare for failure, and create an aircraft that can remain predictable even when the connection does not.
