New Mathematical Pastimes (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025865713)

"New Mathematical Pastimes" is an engaging exploration of recreational mathematics and the captivating world of geometric puzzles. Written by Major P. A. Macmahon, a distinguished mathematician renowned for his significant contributions to combinatorics and partition theory, this work invites readers to discover the aesthetic and logical beauty of mathematical play. The text introduces a variety of original pastimes involving the arrangement of colored tiles, polygons, and cubes, challenging the mind to solve intricate problems of symmetry, permutation, and spatial reasoning.

Macmahon focuses on the transformation of abstract mathematical principles into tangible, visual challenges. By exploring the possibilities of transforming simple geometric shapes through specific rules of color and contact, he provides a foundational understanding of complex patterns and tessellations. This volume serves as both an intellectual exercise and a creative guide for those interested in the intersections of geometry, logic, and artistic design.

Whether for the dedicated student of mathematics or the casual puzzle enthusiast, "New Mathematical Pastimes" remains a seminal work in the genre of mathematical recreations. Its emphasis on the joy of discovery and the systematic exploration of combinatorial possibilities makes it an enduring resource for anyone fascinated by the structural elegance of the mathematical universe.
