In New Paradigms in Southern Jewish History, 1585-1860, renowned historian of American Jewry Mark K. Bauman provides the first comprehensive, scholarly survey of southern Jewish history up to 1860. Drawing on a dizzying array of primary and secondary sources, Bauman brings together demographics, the history of women and the family, economic and religious history, identity, Black-Jewish relations, acceptance and antisemitism, and other topics into a complex and often perplexing whole. The work summarizes and analyzes existing scholarship, opens avenues for new research, raises new theories and questions, and demonstrates the importance of southern Jewish history for the understanding of southern, American, and American Jewish history, as well as the histories of business and economics and urban studies.
