The New York Fire Department (FDNY) is the country s largest. It has an "all hazards" approach which includes medical emergencies and rescue operations.
It is known for its extensive emergency response, including a massive emergency medical service (EMS) system and special units and its use of advanced technology. FDNY responds to a vast range of emergencies, not just fires. Its responsibilities include technical rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, and medical calls.
The FDNY employs over 11,000 uniformed firefighting employees, 4,500 uniformed EMTs, paramedics, and EMS employees, and 2,000 civilian employees
The department uses modern technology like drones, laser methane detectors, and advanced training facilities like subway cars for exercises. Members are nicknamed "New York's Bravest," reflecting a deep sense of tradition and duty.
Some will remember the heart-breaking footage of FDNY fire fighters moving up the stairs of the Twin Towers, against the stream of people moving down to escape on 9/11 2001, only to be crushed when the World Trade Center buildings collapsed.
The department also engages in public education and code enforcement to prevent emergencies.
