The Daishonin (which his honorific title in the Western world means "Saint" or "Benevolent Sage") was born, as he said in his Sado writing, into a poor family of the chandala class-his father, Mikuni no Taifu, and mother, Umegiku, earned their livelihood from fishing. Loyal followers of Holy Nichiren recite this chant, called Daimoku, and other recitations and prayers as part of the Gongyo ritual ("Self-Help Practice"), which is practiced twice a day. St. Nichiren's Self-Help Practice appeared during the Kamakura period (1185-1333), a time marked by civil wars and natural disasters in Japan and significant economic hardship.
