Nobody Taught You This (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798295793219)

Most people walk into a salary review, a car dealership, a hospital billing office, or a landlord's leasing room with no idea that the number they're about to be handed was chosen with the expectation that they won't push back. They don't push back. They pay more than they had to, drive home, and wonder.

Nobody Taught You This is the book that changes that.

Brian Briggs spent a decade on an Ohio dealership floor - not as a buyer, but as the person on the other side of the desk. He was trained to read hesitation, to work the worksheet, to guide buyers toward a number that worked for the dealership. He was good at it. He also grew a conscience. After leaving the floor, he spent several years becoming a certified civil mediator and has since spent more than 25 years helping ordinary people resolve disputes with landlords, contractors, hospitals, employers, and anyone else who was counting on them not knowing their options.

He has been on both sides. This book is what he knows.

Nobody Taught You This walks readers through every major category where the average American leaves money on the table - not from ignorance, but because they were never told the game existed. Each chapter delivers the insider's view of how the other side of the table thinks, what they're counting on, and the specific, usable process readers can apply immediately. No vague encouragement. No motivational filler. Chapter by chapter, situation by situation:

• Salary and compensation - what employers expect you not to know, and the exact language that changes the conversation
• Rent - what landlords can flex on, when they can flex on it, and how to ask without torpedoing the relationship
• Car buying - the full picture: sticker price, dealer markup, financing games, trade-in tactics, and the extended warranty room
• Medical bills - error rates, financial assistance programs most patients never hear about, and how to open a negotiation with a billing department
• Monthly subscriptions and services - the retention playbook that cable, internet, and cell providers use, and the scripts that work against it
• Contractors - how quotes are built, what's negotiable, and how to protect yourself before and after the job starts
• High-stakes situations - debt collectors, funeral homes, wedding vendors, and the IRS, which is more flexible than most people have been told

The book also addresses the psychology underneath all of it: why people don't ask, what they're afraid of, and how to quiet those instincts in the moments that count.

This is not a book for professional negotiators. It's for people who have never thought of themselves as negotiators at all - which is precisely the audience that needs it most, and the audience most likely to recognize themselves on every page.

Audience: General adult readers; personal finance; consumer advocacy; career and workplace; homeowners and renters; anyone who has ever paid a bill without questioning it.
