Notes on Malthus' Principles of Political Economy (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025472089)

"Notes on Malthus' Principles of Political Economy" represents a profound intellectual encounter between two of the most influential figures in the history of economic thought. In this work, David Ricardo provides a systematic, point-by-point critique of the theories put forward by his friend and intellectual rival, Thomas Malthus. These notes offer deep insight into the foundational debates of classical economics, particularly concerning the nature of value, the causes of rent, and the mechanisms of economic growth and distribution.

Ricardo meticulously addresses Malthus's views on effective demand and the potential for general gluts in the market, articulating the rigorous logic that would come to define the Ricardian system. By examining the core disagreements between these two thinkers, the text illuminates the development of 19th-century political economy and the evolution of the labor theory of value. This work is an essential resource for scholars of economic history and those interested in the theoretical underpinnings of capitalism. It showcases Ricardo's analytical precision and remains a vital document for understanding the divergent paths taken by early economic theorists.
