One of the most interesting linguistic records from the 1700's, despite its brevity, is Jonathan Edwards' Observations on the Language of the Muhhekaneew Indians (1788). While not a complete grammatical treatment of Mahican, this text is one of the better works of the era, all the more valuable for Edwards' native command of the language. This new edition reproduces the book in full with a new introduction, and also features separate bidirectional Mahican-English and English-Mahican indexes for the approximately 150 words cited.
