On the Eucharist A: The Essential Early Christian Treatise on the Holy Sacrament - Timeless Theological Insights into Communion, Divine Grace, and the (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781807529215)

In On the Eucharist A, St. Ambrose of Milan provides a breathtaking exploration of Christianity's central act of worship. During the fourth century, the church was transitioning from a persecuted minority into a recognized, structural pillar of the Roman world. As multitudes flocked to the faith, spiritual leaders like Ambrose faced the monumental task of educating new converts about the profound weight and reality of the sacraments. They had to ensure that the physical act of eating and drinking was understood as a miraculous, deeply spiritual encounter with the divine.

Far more than a manual of church rituals, this treatise is a theological masterpiece. Ambrose masterfully utilizes scriptural precedents-from the manna in the wilderness to the miracles of Christ-to argue that the elements of communion are fundamentally transformed by the power of the divine word. He challenges his audience to look past the limits of human sight and logic, urging them to perceive the hidden spiritual realities taking place upon the altar.

This volume has been carefully formatted to bring the ancient world's most pressing spiritual instructions into sharp focus for today's reader. Ambrose's profound reflections challenge modern audiences to reconsider the profound weight of their traditions, the nature of divine grace, and the ancient, unbroken roots of their faith.
