In a world that moves faster than the Tokyo subway, a woman reaches fifty and begins to feel inadequate when it comes to keeping up with technology, while also adjusting to the changes in her body and the new image she's projecting. Turning fifty is no easy feat, but for a woman, it's even harder. At this age, men become more interesting, but we're seen as just getting old. The truth is, aches and pains are a universal experience, but for some reason, the world doesn't forgive us for giving in to the passage of time.
With a cheerful and self-ironic tone, I've tried to shed light on some of the themes that come with turning fifty, from a purely personal perspective and keeping things as light as possible when it comes to advice and miracle cures-because, in reality, there is no cure for aging. What does exist is a billion-dollar industry that wants us to believe otherwise. The real "cure" for aging is to live fully and enjoy every moment to the limits of our energy.
Inertia is not an option, because life is movement-and the only thing truly immobile, definitive, and irreversible is death. At fifty, we may not be brand new, but we're far from obsolete. We are capable of much and still have so much to do and to give.
This work is purely autobiographical, inspired by an army of fifty-something women who've crossed my path at different stages of life and have taught me that the best is yet to come.
