Origin of the Erie Canal (1870) (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781162100166)

""Origin of the Erie Canal"" is a historical account written by Benjamin Hall Wright in 1870, detailing the creation and construction of the Erie Canal in New York State. The book begins by exploring the economic and political climate of the early 19th century, where the need for a waterway connecting the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean was becoming increasingly urgent. Wright then delves into the various proposals and debates that ultimately led to the approval and funding of the Erie Canal project. The book goes on to describe the challenges faced by the engineers and laborers who worked tirelessly to construct the canal, including the excavation of miles of earth and rock, the creation of locks and aqueducts, and the management of water levels. Wright also provides insight into the social and cultural impact of the canal, including the growth of towns and cities along its route, the boom in trade and commerce, and the transformation of transportation in the United States. Throughout the book, Wright draws on primary sources such as letters, diaries, and government reports to provide a detailed and comprehensive account of the Erie Canal's origins and impact. ""Origin of the Erie Canal"" is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of American infrastructure and economic development. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
