Our Cuban Colony: A Study in Sugar (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781025884479)

"Our Cuban Colony - A Study in Sugar" is a seminal examination of the economic and political relationship between the United States and Cuba during the early twentieth century. Leland Hamilton Jenks provides a rigorous analysis of how the sugar industry became the central axis of Cuban-American relations, effectively transforming the island into an economic dependency of North American interests. The work explores the complex dynamics of foreign investment, trade policies, and diplomatic pressures that shaped the Cuban socio-economic landscape following the Spanish-American War.

Jenks meticulously details the rise of the sugar plantocracy and the profound influence of American capital on local governance, land ownership, and infrastructure. This study serves as a critical historical resource for understanding the roots of Caribbean geopolitics and the mechanisms of financial imperialism. By investigating the structural shifts caused by a mono-culture economy, the author highlights the lasting impact of foreign corporate interests on national sovereignty and social development. "Our Cuban Colony - A Study in Sugar" remains an essential text for readers interested in economic history, international relations, and Latin American studies.
