Owned by the People: Twenty Cooperatives That Changed the World (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798171531478)

A padlocked cooperative office in rural Bangladesh. A milk cooperative that made a farmer's daily payment as reliable as a paycheck. A worker-owned factory federation that turned five graduates of a small technical school into 71,000 co-owners. What separates a cooperative that thrives for over a century from one that dies quietly behind a locked door?

Owned by the People takes readers inside twenty of the world's most remarkable cooperative enterprises, from Spain's Mondragon Corporation and India's Amul dairy empire to Denmark's Coop and Brazil's physician-owned Sistema Unimed, to answer that question with evidence, not sentiment. Written by a career cooperative administrator with fourteen years of field experience across Bangladesh's rural economy, this book doesn't just celebrate cooperative success. It also examines the crises: a factory collapse that tested Mondragon's solidarity system. This melamine scandal cost Fonterra its reputation in China, and a data breach that forced Desjardins to rebuild member trust from scratch.

What emerges is a practical framework, the OWNER Framework, distilled from what these twenty organizations actually did right, and a 100-point Cooperative Success Scorecard any cooperative manager, board member, or policymaker can use to diagnose their own organization. A complete fifteen-step practical guide translates these global lessons into an actionable playbook for building, or rescuing, a cooperative from the ground up.

Inside, you'll discover:

How Amul's same-day, transparent payment model turned Gujarati dairy farmers into owners of a global brand
Why Mondragon's inter-cooperative solidarity fund saved thousands of jobs when its flagship factory collapsed
How a mutual insurance association came to control one of Germany's largest listed insurers, without losing member control
What happened when a 160-year-old Danish cooperative needed rescuing by another cooperative in 2024
A practical, adaptable roadmap for building durable, democratically governed enterprises anywhere in the world

This book is for cooperative leaders and managers, government cooperative officers and policymakers, social entrepreneurs, business and development studies students, NGO professionals, and anyone curious whether there's a better way to own and run an enterprise than the shareholder-first model most business books take for granted.

Grounded in original research and written with the field-level honesty of someone who has spent a career inside the cooperative movement, Owned by the People is both a global tour and a working manual, proof that for over 180 years, ordinary people organizing around shared ownership have quietly built some of the most resilient institutions on earth.
