Demigod series - Book 5: PastorIncreasing use of his supernatural abilities puts greater pressure on Jason's precarious relationship with Maria. Working hard to navigate an increasingly difficult route between Maria's faith to the Church, her obligations as a detective in the Brooklyn police force and his own moral code, Jason grows convinced he is the one who caused the underlying problem between them after previously using his power to heal Maria. A timely residential course for Maria offers a break, at the right time to let rising tensions between them cool down to a more manageable level. At a loose end while Maria is away, Jason starts a new project that provides the excuse to follow up on someone with their own power intent on plaguing him with unwelcome night-time visions. Their siren calls through his dreams inexorably drag him towards a common foe he does not seek but soon finds he cannot avoid. Having grown confident of his own abilities, with this adversary his supernatural powers become unreliable, misleading and consequently deadly. After showing his hand, direct conflict becomes inevitable, and once engaged in earnest, only one of them will survive to walk away. To late, he discovers his opponent has stronger powers and an all-round winning hand that leaves Jason without an answer and nowhere to turn. The battle ground is drawn up in Louisiana, the Pelican state, home to vast swamps and voodoo, part of America's deep south bound up in the legacy of its pre-civil war history. Letting himself be suckered into a rigged game, he is suddenly scrabbling for a way out with nothing looking like it will work. After an extraordinary run, his luck was at last turning against him, with everything at stake, more than he would ever have willingly added to the pot. With all other options closing-down, the unknown force of voodoo provides a tentative way through the quagmire he is in. Winning and losing become relative, survival becoming the overriding objective. While he is trying to work out the voodoo riddle which offers the only available lifeline, the clock is ticking and for once it is not a problem Gilgamesh can answer ...
