Six-year-old Lisa "Lilly" Isaack's Jewish family was faced with a difficult decision. With the Nazis fully in control of the German government and attacks against Jews growing more violent by the day, the Isaack family had to make a choice. They could remain in Germany, at the mercy of the Nazi Party, or they could set out for unfamiliar territory and hope to lead better lives far away from the home they knew. Persecuted, Stateless, Free: One Girl's Flight from the Nazis explores a forgotten piece of history through the eyes of Lilly Isaack, who escaped with her family from Nazi Germany to grow up in the vibrant, persecuted, and largely overlooked community of Shanghai's Jewish refugees.
Lilly and her family worked with their neighbors-both Chinese and Jewish-to carve out an existence for themselves in Shanghai. Under the looming shadow of occupation by the Nazi-allied Japanese Imperial Army and facing disease, starvation, and bombings, Lilly Isaack learned and loved and ultimately survived to immigrate to the United States.
Academics and history buffs alike will be fascinated by this little-known chapter in World War II history.
Lisa MacVittie delivers talks to middle and high school students about the Holocaust and about her experience as a member of Shanghai's Jewish refugee community. Through her work, she aims to inspire her listeners while educating them to watch for signs of future atrocities.
Donald MacVittie has written in a wide range of genres, among them fantasy, technical manuals, and historical biography. He has a master of science from Nova Southeastern University, and his writing has received an award from the American Society for Business Publication Editors.
