Pharaohs, Fellahs and Explorers (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781162634234)

Pharaohs, Fellahs and Explorers is a book written by Amelia B. Edwards, an English novelist, journalist, and Egyptologist. The book is a travelogue of her journey to Egypt in 1873-1874, where she explored the ancient ruins and documented her experiences in vivid detail. Edwards' writing style is engaging and descriptive, as she takes readers on a journey through the Nile Delta, Cairo, the Pyramids of Giza, Luxor, and other ancient sites. She provides historical and cultural context to the places she visits, and shares her observations on the people she meets, including the local ""fellahs"" or peasants, and the European explorers and archaeologists who were also working in Egypt at the time.Pharaohs, Fellahs and Explorers is not only a travelogue, but also a historical document that sheds light on the state of Egypt in the late 19th century, as it was undergoing a period of rapid modernization and colonialism. Edwards' book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in Egyptology, travel writing, or the history of Egypt.1891. Edwards enjoyed three separate careers: as a journalist, a novelist, and an Egyptologist. She was also an active supporter of the suffrage movement, serving at one time as Vice-President of the Society for Promoting Women's Suffrage. Amelia Edwards never married, but lived and traveled for much of her life with a female companion. Though she was a popular novelist, today you are most likely to come across her tales of travel. In this series of lectures, Edwards' personality sparkles through the pages. In one chapter, she describes in detail a Queen of Egypt, Hatasu, dissenting from other Egyptologists who minimized her importance. Edwards' love and knowledge of Egyptology are ably demonstrated in this collection.
