Phasing in Space: Planning Space Power for the Six Phase Campaign Model (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781288330249)

In the December 2005 draft of Joint Publication 3-0, Joint Operations, the Joint Staff proposes a concept of phasing for military operations that includes six phases vice the four phases used in current doctrine.1 These new phases (Shape, Deter, Seize Initiative, Dominate, Stabilize, and Enable Civil Authority) provide a framework for campaign planning and sequencing military operations within a joint force commander's area of operations to achieve strategic and operational objectives. Because space operations play a critical role in military operations, space planners need to organize space operations from the four space mission areas within the six-phased framework. Because the target audience for this paper includes non-space operators as well as space operators, this paper first describes the four mission areas of space operations: space control/ counterspace, force enhancement, space support, and force application.
