Philip II of Macedon: From Hostage Prince to the Most Powerful King in the Greek World (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798188895075)

Every Greek city state that mattered in the fourth century BC eventually learned to fear a kingdom they had spent generations dismissing as barely civilized. The man responsible was not Alexander the Great. It was his father.

Philip II inherited a Macedonian throne that had claimed the lives of his own brothers, a treasury drained by decades of war, and a western border left wide open to invasion. He was twenty three years old, a former hostage with no realistic path to power, ruling a kingdom most of Greece regarded as a rural backwater unworthy of serious attention. Within twenty years, he had rebuilt Macedonia's army from the ground up, defeated every major power on the Greek mainland, and stood at the head of a Panhellenic league that answered to him alone.

This book traces that transformation in full, beginning generations before Philip's birth with the obscure highland origins of the Macedonian people and the legendary founding of the Argead dynasty. It follows the kingdom through its uneasy, often contested relationship with the southern Greek world, through its entanglement in the Persian Wars and the Peloponnesian War, and through the internal chaos that nearly tore Macedonia apart more than once before Philip ever took the throne. From there, the book turns to Philip's own remarkable life: his formative years as a young hostage in Thebes, his sudden and unexpected rise to kingship, his creation of the Macedonian phalanx and the sarissa that made it so devastating, and the long sequence of marriages, wars, and calculated alliances that carried his kingdom to the height of Greek power. It closes with the tangled family rivalries that surrounded his final years and the still debated circumstances of his assassination.

Readers interested in ancient Greece, military history, or the origins of Alexander the Great's empire will find in Philip a figure who rarely receives the attention his achievements warrant. Alexander's conquest of Persia did not begin with Alexander. It began with the army his father built, the political framework his father established, and the ambition his father openly declared two years before his son ever crossed into Asia. Understanding Philip means understanding where that empire actually came from, and understanding just how improbable Macedonia's rise to power really was.

Written in a narrative style that favors clarity and historical grounding over exaggeration, this book draws on the surviving accounts of ancient historians to tell the story of a kingdom's transformation and the king who accomplished it. For readers who want to understand ancient Macedonia and the man who built the foundation of one of history's greatest empires, before his son ever picked up a sword, this is where that story begins.
