Plott Hound Owner's Guide: Training, Managing Prey Drive, Providing Proper Exercise, and Raising a Loyal, Well-Behaved Hunting Companion (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798195657093)

PLOTT HOUND OWNER'S GUIDE is a practical, start-to-finish handbook for raising, training, and caring for a Plott Hound at every stage of life. Whether your dog will be a hunting partner or a devoted family companion, this guide shows you how to work with the breed's natural instincts instead of struggling against them.
Plott Hounds were developed for endurance tracking and big-game hunting in rugged terrain. Those same instincts often appear at home as barking, chasing, digging, escaping, or what many owners mistake for stubbornness. This book explains why these behaviors happen and gives you clear, realistic methods to channel that energy into positive, manageable habits through structure, exercise, mental stimulation, and consistent communication.
You will learn how to choose a healthy, well-bred puppy or rescue, prepare your home and yard properly, and handle the critical first days together. Step-by-step guidance covers crate training, housebreaking, socialization, and building trust from the beginning. The guide also explains how to feed a high-energy scent hound for performance, maintain preventive health care, and follow simple grooming routines that support long-term wellness.
Training is covered in detail, from basic obedience and leash manners to scent games, enrichment activities, and safe off-leash responsiveness. Practical solutions are included for common challenges such as excessive barking, destructive chewing, prey drive, separation issues, and roaming.
For readers interested in breeding, the book provides responsible, ethical information on health testing, pregnancy care, whelping, and raising well-socialized puppies. As your Plott Hound ages, you will also learn how to adjust diet, exercise, and daily care to keep them healthy, active, and mentally engaged into the senior years.
