Hazlehurst places the emergence of the party in the early 1980s in the context of historical patterns of resistance and cooperation with the European majority. Modern political networks, leadership styles, mobilization strategies, ideologies, political rhetoric and symbology are examined. The study provides an overview of the contested nature of Maori ethnicity and of conflicting modern and traditional loyalties.

KAYLEEN M. HAZLEHURST is a Senior Lecturer in Cross-Cultural Studies in the Faculty of Arts, Queensland University of Technology, Australia. She is a fifth generation New Zealander, and has conducted research on the Maori since 1979. Hazlehurst was traines in anthropology at McGill and Toronto Universities. She was employed for eight years as a Criminologist and Senior Criminologist at the Australian Institute of Criminology, Canberra, and has held policy and research positions with the National Aboriginal Conference and the Aboriginal Development Commission.
