Polly: A New-Fashioned Girl (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9789376550364)

A hush falls over the drawing room as a determined young girl, newly arrived in a world governed by strict expectations and the subtle codes of Victorian family life, steels herself against the watchful eyes of a new school and the uncertainty of friendship. Within these pages, the delicate tensions of nineteenth century literature are brought to life through the story of a girl navigating the shifting landscape between childhood innocence and adult responsibility. The narrative unfolds in a setting where every gesture and word is weighed, and where the smallest acts of kindness or defiance can tip the balance of a reputation. This is a work that stands at the heart of British children's novels, capturing the nuances of moral development fiction with a clarity that resonates across generations. The everyday dramas of a girls school story-rivalries, alliances, and the forging of character-are depicted with an honesty that reveals both the constraints and the quiet strengths of young girls literature from the Victorian era. Here, the coming of age novel finds its truest expression, not in grand adventures, but in the subtle, often unspoken challenges of growing up within the confines of tradition and duty. What makes this narrative enduring is its finely observed portrait of a young woman striving to define herself amidst the rules and rituals of a close-knit community. The author's insight into the emotional world of her characters, and her deft handling of the social expectations that shaped British juvenile fiction, ensure the story remains engaging for modern readers and collectors alike. The interplay of family, friendship, and personal growth is depicted with a sensitivity that continues to speak to those interested in Victorian girls fiction and the broader tradition of the Victorian family story.
