Prosper Merimee: 1854-1855 (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781025928692)

"Prosper Merimee De 1854 a 1855" is a detailed scholarly exploration of a critical period in the life and career of the eminent French writer and historian Prosper Mérimée. Authored by the noted academic Pierre Trahard, this work examines the mid-1850s, a time when Mérimée was deeply embedded in the social and political fabric of the Second French Empire as a close confidant to Empress Eugénie and Emperor Napoleon III.

The study provides an in-depth look at Mérimée's intellectual evolution, his administrative responsibilities as the Inspector General of Historical Monuments, and his prolific correspondence. Trahard meticulously reconstructs these two years to show how Mérimée navigated the complexities of court life while continuing to contribute to the literary and cultural heritage of France. The volume offers significant insights into the transition of his literary style and his reflections on the changing political landscape of Europe.

As an essential resource for scholars of 19th-century French literature, this book illuminates the personal and professional challenges faced by one of France's most versatile men of letters. It serves as both a focused biography and a cultural history of the mid-19th-century French elite, highlighting Mérimée's enduring influence as a master of the short story and a guardian of national history.
