Psyche (Hardcover) (ISBN-13: 9781025931975)

"Psyche" remains one of the most significant and influential studies of ancient Greek religion and the concept of the soul. In this masterwork, Erwin Rohde provides an exhaustive investigation into the cult of souls and the belief in immortality as it developed throughout Greek history. Starting with the Homeric period, the work traces the evolution of spiritual practices and the complex relationship between the living and the dead.

Through a rigorous analysis of literary and archaeological evidence, Rohde explores the rise of hero worship, the significance of the Eleusinian and Orphic mysteries, and the transformative impact of Dionysian cults on the Greek psyche. The book delves into the philosophical shifts that led from primitive notions of the afterlife to sophisticated doctrines of soul migration and eternal existence. As a foundational text for scholars of classics, mythology, and the history of religion, "Psyche" offers profound insights into the intellectual and spiritual life of ancient Greece. This scholarly tour de force continues to be essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the origins of Western concepts of the spirit and the divine.
