Radical Empiricism: William James and the Boundary No Inquiry Escapes (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798184880952)

A century ago, an American philosopher made a claim so simple that almost no one believed he meant it. William James said there is nothing hidden behind our experience. No invisible matter propping up the world from below. No cosmic Mind holding it together from above. Whatever joins one moment to the next, he insisted, is already there in the joining itself. The relations are real. The transitions are felt. The universe needs no glue imported from outside.
The professional philosophers filed this under "vague" and moved on. This book argues they made one of the great mistakes in the history of thought.
Radical Empiricism brings James back as a living conversation partner and walks him straight into the twenty-first century, testing his boldest ideas against neuroscience, physics, and artificial intelligence. Along the way it does three things no previous account has dared to combine. It shows that James was not a charming failure but the missing link between the old empiricism and a new picture of reality built from relations rather than things. It corrects him on the one point where he was too trusting, arguing that experience is never innocent, that perception is the maintenance of a world rather than a clear window onto it. And it follows his vision out to its largest possible scale, where a universe that holds itself together and is still in the making turns out to be more than a poetic mood. It becomes a hypothesis about the cosmos.
Underneath all three runs a single discovery James reached long before physics caught up to him: that our deepest words, consciousness and matter among them, name roles that nothing can be proven to occupy. Every serious inquiry, pushed far enough, arrives at the same quiet wall. This is the boundary no inquiry escapes, and James was its first witness.
Written without a single equation, in prose that is as playful as it is serious, this is a book for anyone who has ever suspected that the world is stranger, more honest, and more unfinished than we were taught.
