Rampal and the Metaphysics of Sound (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798195923471)

In this penetrating and original essay, Roberto Barreca offers a radical rethinking of musical interpretation through the figure of Jean-Pierre Rampal. Moving beyond the conventional boundaries of musicology, Barreca develops a bold aesthetic vision in which sound itself becomes the ultimate locus of meaning.

Rampal's flute, in this perspective, is not merely an instrument but a metaphysical medium: a vehicle through which beauty manifests in its purest, most elusive form-at once disembodied and sensuous, fluid and inexhaustible. Through a series of refined and often provocative analyses, Barreca explores the paradoxes of interpretation: freedom and rigor, expression and correctness, virtuosity and truth.

From Bach to Vivaldi, from Telemann to Khachaturian, the essay traverses a vast musical landscape, uncovering hidden aesthetic regions and proposing a new "history of music" grounded not in chronology or authorship, but in the internal logic of beauty. Central to this vision is the concept of "intersection" the rare and luminous coincidence between the poetic world of the performer and that of the work.

Blending phenomenology, psychoanalytic insight, and a deeply personal listening experience, Rampal and the Metaphysics of Sound challenges established doctrines and invites the reader into a richer, more profound encounter with music-where sound is not a means, but the essence itself.
