If you'd told Donna M. Hayes that one day she would drug and kidnap her mother, she wouldn't have dignified you with a response. And yet, when faced with an insidious enemy-Alzheimer's-which has set up camp in her mother's mind, Donna and her brother do just that.
Over the eight years that Donna serves as her mother's caregiver and advocate, she is forced to battle through numerous conflicts on various fronts-including fighting for her own mental and emotional health, her marriage, and her faith in God.
In Reflections, Donna offers a candid account of what life is like for the caregiver of someone suffering from Alzheimer's disease. She recounts her struggles with guilt, her desperate cries for help, God's silence, and her loneliness and growing despair. But though hers is a story of loss, it is not a tale of woe. As Donna continues to fight for her mother, while fighting against her mother's disease, the seed of hope takes root in her heart.
Written for caregivers by one who has survived the trenches, Reflections points you to the hope that will guide you through your darkest days.
Donna M. Hayes grew up in South Philadelphia in a traditional Catholic Italian neighborhood and went on to attend the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. She currently lives in Bayville, New Jersey, with her husband, Paul.
Donna considers her greatest accomplishment to date to be her ability to serve her mother throughout her battle with Alzheimer's disease. She recounts her trying experience in her inspiring memoir Reflections.
