Restorative Justice Circles-WORKBOOK (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798295630668)

Restorative Justice Circles: Healing Through Community Support (Second Edition) offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary exploration of one of the most transformative social movements of our time. Dr. Maxwell Shimba, founder of the United States Institute for Restorative Justice, presents a masterful synthesis of theology, law, psychology, philosophy, and empirical research to demonstrate that restorative justice is not merely a program or technique but a reflection of the divine order inscribed upon the human heart. This expanded second edition guides readers through the paradigm shift from retributive to restorative justice, examining how circles create sacred space where victims find healing, offenders embrace genuine accountability, and communities rediscover their capacity for collective restoration. Drawing on indigenous wisdom traditions, biblical foundations, and cutting-edge research on restorative cycles in biology and psychology, this work establishes restorative justice as a participation in the very rhythms of creation itself.

The book systematically explores every dimension of restorative practice across fifteen comprehensive chapters. Readers will discover the six core principles that constitute the moral architecture of restorative justice-inclusivity, voluntariness, respect and equality, accountability, reparation, and reintegration-and understand their essential interdependence. Through detailed examination of the circle process, from preparation through closing, practitioners gain practical tools for facilitating transformative dialogue. Rich case studies from schools, communities, workplaces, and criminal justice settings demonstrate restorative principles in action, while dedicated chapters on challenges, psychological impact, and cultural adaptations prepare facilitators for the complexities of real-world practice. The second edition features expanded coverage of trauma-informed practice, technology integration, environmental justice applications, and strategies for building sustainable restorative communities.

Written for community leaders, educators, justice professionals, mental health providers, pastoral ministers, and all who seek to make a positive difference in a wounded world, this book bridges the gap between profound theoretical vision and practical implementation guidance. Dr. Shimba's work challenges readers to move beyond adversarial assumptions that have dominated Western legal thought for centuries and to recover ancient wisdom about the nature of harm, accountability, and repair. Whether you are beginning your journey with restorative justice or seeking to deepen an established practice, Restorative Justice Circles offers both the conceptual framework and the practical tools to participate in the great work of healing, reconciliation, and community restoration. The restorative cycles of creation await our participation-this book shows the way.
