RIVERS OF WOMEN, THE PLAY, created by poet and oral performer Shirley Bradley LeFlore, is a theatrical presentation that combines poetry with photographs by acclaimed Chicago photographer Michael J. Bracey. Bracey enhances LeFlore's poetry with his visuals, adding a layer of depth and emotion through his distinctive approach to conceptualization. The play is inspired by the poem "Rivers of Women" and features some of LeFlore's most significant poetic works, which are deeply rooted in the narratives and voices of women, and also include elements of music and dance. With an all-female cast, this moving, humorous, and impactful production delves into themes of family, love, female relationships, race, and religion. Overall, it is a vivid and lyrical performance rich in folk sentiments, evoking images that reflect the work of an urban anthropologist rather than just a poet, showcasing LeFlore's artistic brilliance. RIVERS OF WOMEN, THE PLAY debuted at the Missouri History Museum in St. Louis in 2013 and was later performed at The Grandel in St. Louis in 2022.
