Rolling Through Trauma: How Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Helped Me Heal Through Grief, Depression, Addiction, and Pain (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9798171250249)

What if the lessons that helped you survive on the mat could also help you survive the hardest moments of your life?

In Rolling Through Trauma, Ian A. Jenkins, EdD explores the unexpected connection between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and healing from grief, depression, addiction, and pain.

Drawing on his own experience with devastating loss, addiction, fatherhood, education, mental health work, and years on the mat, Jenkins shows how the principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu become powerful lessons for life:

Learning to breathe under pressure.
Building a strong base before trying to move forward.
Creating boundaries without shutting people out.
Recognizing when protection has become hiding.
Finding options when you feel powerless.
Moving a little when you feel completely stuck.
Knowing when to tap and ask for help.
And understanding that recovery rarely happens through one dramatic breakthrough. It happens one decision at a time.

This is not a book about becoming tougher. It is about discovering that sometimes real strength means slowing down, breathing, asking for help, accepting where you are, and continuing to move even when progress feels almost invisible.

You do not need to practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to understand these lessons. You only need to know what it feels like to be under pressure.

Part memoir, part reflection on trauma and recovery, Rolling Through Trauma offers an honest look at what happens when the lessons learned on the mat begin changing the way we understand life beyond it.

Sometimes you cannot control the position you find yourself in. But you can learn what to do next.
