Satori Now: Awakening Your Highest Self (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781453823545)

The peace you've been searching for was never somewhere else - but always right here, waiting,

Enlightenment is not necessarily to be found on a distant mountaintop, reserved for austere monks and mystics. It can be a way of seeing the world that is available to you right now - in your morning commute, the washing-up, the ordinary minutes of an ordinary day. Satori Now makes a quietly radical promise: that the connected, luminous awareness the Zen tradition calls satori is not something you must withdraw from the world to find. It is something you can cultivate in the midst of it.

Satori - known in Zen as kensho - is the sudden, intuitive insight that the world of separate selves and objects is an illusion concealing a deeper, fully interconnected reality. Once tasted, it is never forgotten; it opens the doors of perception and changes you forever. The mystics called it union, the Sufis fana, the psychologist Abraham Maslow the peak experience. Whatever its name, it points to the same homecoming - and this book is your map.

Written with the unhurried certainty of a work that, in the author's words, "arrived whole," Satori Now takes you step by patient step. You will learn why the restless, comparison-driven ego was built for a vanished world of predators and scarcity, and how to put it gently back in its proper place. You will discover the art of living in the present moment - the only moment in which you are truly alive - and why every moment, rightly met, is the best moment. You will learn to listen to intuition, the quiet voice of your Highest Self, and to tell it apart from the louder counterfeits of impulse and fear.

The journey deepens through practical, dogma-free instruction in meditation; through communion with the natural world; and through the twin philosophical roots of Zen itself - the compassionate clarity of Buddhism and the effortless wisdom of the Taoist Tao Te Ching, rendered here into living, contemporary language. Along the way you will encounter forest bathing and the neuroscience of the settled mind, synchronicity and the holographic universe, wu wei in an age that worships the grind, and the great Zen kōans that disarm the rational mind and let intuition speak.

This third edition has been substantially expanded for the modern reader. New material confronts the particular afflictions of our time - the attention economy and its slot-machine devices, the outsourcing of our inner voice to algorithms, the strange irony of seeking stillness through an app engineered to keep us distracted. Yet the book never asks you to flee the world or delete your accounts. The cave you require is interior, and you can carry it onto a crowded train.

What sets Satori Now apart is its refusal to flatter or oversimplify. It meets the sceptic honestly, conceding what the laboratory can and cannot confirm. It admits that Nature is not only gentle but also "red in tooth and claw," and finds the deeper peace on the far side of that honesty. It is sober, judicious and grounded - and lit, throughout, by a dry wit and a genuine reverence for the mystery of being alive.

Whoever you are, wherever you live, if you have ever sensed that there is more to this life than the restless surface of it, this book will speak to you. The destination is wonderful. But the journey, as you will discover, is the destination.

Begin where you are. Begin now.
