Scary Seances - Short Stories of Seances and Visitations (Fantasy and Horror Classics) (Paperback) (ISBN-13: 9781447406150)

When the medium speaks, what answers from the void?

Step into the flickering candlelight of the Victorian era and beyond with this classic collection of supernatural tales. Scary Seances gathers five chilling stories that explore the delicate, often terrifying boundary between the living and the dead, featuring visitations, spiritualists, and the grim consequences of disturbing the departed.

This volume showcases masters of the macabre who were deeply fascinated by the spiritualist movement, blending gothic atmosphere with psychological tension:

• The Rapping Stones by Charles Dickens: A rare piece of spooky fiction by the Victorian titan, tapping into the popular--and often fraudulent--phenomena of spirit communication that enthralled his generation.

• The Sire de Maletroit's Door by Robert Louis Stevenson: A tale of sudden, terrifying entrapment. While perhaps not a traditional "seance," this story embodies the chilling atmosphere of an innocent man stumbling into a desperate, life-or-death scenario orchestrated by unseen forces.

• Scar Tissue by Henry S. Whitehead: A dark gem of early 20th-century horror, Whitehead (a correspondent of H.P. Lovecraft) delivers a shocking story of physical and spiritual mutilation, where the wounds of the soul can become horrifyingly real.

• Through the Veil by Arthur Conan Doyle: A powerful and poignant story from the creator of Sherlock Holmes, who was a passionate believer in spiritualism. This narrative explores the hope, mystery, and potential sorrow of piercing the barrier that separates our world from the next.

This collection provides a fascinating look at the era's obsession with the occult, each story a unique invitation to peer into the void. Complete with detailed biographies of every featured author, it's an essential read for anyone who dares to ask: What is waiting on the other side of the curtain?
