These pioneer wrestlers popularized American professional wrestling in the 19th Century.
Homer Lane, J. H. McLaughlin, H.M. Dufur, and John McMahon popularized collar-and-elbow wrestling in the 1860s and 1870s. William Muldoon popularized Greco-Roman wrestling but Andre Christol and Thiebaud Bauer established it. If he had lived, Clarence Whistler may have surpassed all three.
