Carroll Boeder was born on October 3rd, 1930 in a farmhouse about one and one-half miles northwest of Sharon, North Dakota. Her parents were Alf Marle Rue and Elvira Fern Kloster Rue. The day of my birth was, my mother recalled, cold and windy. My Dad was in the fields plowing with the horses. Dr. Gibbons from Finley, North Dakota arrived at the farm after being called on the wall crank phone. Carroll Mae Rue arrived at 9:45 p.m.. Dad was 31 years old and Mom was 27. My birth certificate incorrectly listed the spelling of my name as "Carol." My baptismal certificate was also misspelled, containing only one "r" but two "l's". I think that, being farmers and hoping for a boy, my parents wanted my name spelled in a masculine manner - "Carroll" rather than "Carol." In that day and age, it was not customary for parents to write or call the state capital and request the birth certificate to review it for errors. My Dad has similar errors in his records, as his name was not "Alfred" as shown on my birth certificate, but rather "Alf." Mom always said that she would not like a child of hers to have blond hair. But in my childhood years, Mother said that my hair was so white that my pink scalp showed through it. My Dad's parents were Norwegian; Mom's father was Norwegian and her mother was Pennsylvania Dutch. Since graduating from high school as the class valedictorian, I have worked as a nurse in several cities in the Midwest, particularly enjoying my professional work with psychiatric patients. Most of my adult life has been focused on my children and grandchildren, with lots of attention to my love of gardening, literature, and many friends.
