More than thirty years ago, 'Pacers' and 'Sprinters' became synonymous with Diesel Multiple Units. The Class 142 Pacers, introduced in the mid-1980s, remain in service despite continuous criticism. Since then, the rail network has seen around twenty classes of Second Generation DMUs enter service.
This whistle-stop tour of non-electrified lines across the UK examines these units in action, from ScotRail Class 158s and 170s out of Inverness to Great Western Railway's Class 150s and 153s in Devon and Cornwall. These lines have survived into the twenty-first century, thanks in part to the second generation DMUs. Perfect for railway enthusiasts and those interested in British transport history.
