John Potterat is one of the country's leading sexually transmissible diseases epidemiologists. He has devoted his professional life to STD/HIV control since 1968, first with the CDC's syphilis eradication program (1968-1972) and, subsequently (1972-2001), with the health department in Colorado Springs, where he focused on community STD/HIV transmission dynamics; on the configuration of sexual networks underlying gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV transmission; on contact tracing initiatives; and on the epidemiology of prostitution. He is currently an independent consultant specializing in the epidemiology of AIDS in Africa, with time to pursue his favorite hobbies: reading non-fiction, tennis, and collecting ancient coins. He is married-with grown, independent children-and lives with his wife Susan and black Lab Emmy in Colorado Springs.
